    Migration has more often been the source of conflict than cooperation in Mexico‐US relations. The US accepts immigrants from and trades with many nations, but virtually all Mexican migrants head for the US, and most Mexican trade is with the US. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which went into effect on January 1, , was expected to convert this migration . This fact sheet uses U.S. and Mexican apprehensions data to trace the evolving trends in unaccompanied child and family migration from Central America through Mexico and to the United States, and discusses the push factors and pull factors responsible for the increase in flows seen in recent years, as well as the growing role of smuggling organizations.   A new book released today by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), Migration and the Great Recession: The Transatlantic Experience, traces the economic downturn’s effects on migration trends, native-born and immigrant employment rates, remittance flows and public spending cuts and other policy changes in seven major immigrant-receiving.   International migration from Asia grew dramatically in the s and s.
